Wrist Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy of the wrist is a minimally invasive technique which has become the primary method for evaluating and treating many ailments causing wrist pain. These include injuries of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), scapholunate ligament (SL) and lunotriquetral ligament (LT). Wrist arthroscopy is also used to aid in the reduction and treatment of distal radius fractures and the removal of loose bodies in the wrist. Arthroscopy is also performed to identify the cause of wrist pain when regular imaging techniques such as X-ray, CT scan and MRI have failed to make the diagnosis. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the wrist and appropriate training in wrist arthroscopy is very important in achieving successful results. At Central Jersey Hand Surgery, our doctors are experts in treating your ailments using arthroscopy.

Initially, the patient receives a thorough examination in the office. Provocative tests are performed to try and reproduce the pain and pinpoint the source. Imaging studies obtained may include X-ray, MRI, CT scan and Arthrogram.

Conservative management of wrist pain may include splinting, injection with cortisone and physical therapy. If conservative methods fail, if the injury cannot be treated conservatively or the source of the pain cannot be identified, then a Wrist Arthroscopy is scheduled. General anesthesia is usually utilized. Very small incisions (usually 2 or 3 portals) are made on the back of the wrist and are closed with one suture each. The procedure is performed at one of our 3 state of the art ambulatory surgery centers and after a brief stay in the recovery room, the patient is discharged home.

The major advantage of Arthroscopic Wrist Surgery is that it is minimally invasive in nature. It enables the Hand Surgeon to diagnose and treat problems in a way which causes minimal post-op scarring and discomfort. It has revolutionized the way many wrist injuries are treated.
